Mike Obenauf Small Model 2 Carbon Fiber
I really like Mike Obenauf’s knife designs, and the Model 2 is probably my favourite, with the Model 4 Wharncliffe Knife coming in close second. The knife just has such wonderful flowing lines. This is the linerlock version of the knife, and is a better value I think in the long run over the framelock. A little bit more class, without too much sacrifice in performance.
When you check out True North Knives you’ll notice that the Obenauf’s that are always sold our first are the ones with the bolsters. I’m not sure if it’s because Neil carries more of the framelock models or if it’s because they are more popular. The price is the same, and these bolstered models just do it for me.
I bought the small Model 2 framelock first, because I really liked the lines ont he knife and the way Mike contoured the handles. He did a really great job of that. Grinds are perfect and his knives have this easy going sway about them. Its hard to explain. Really good feel in the hand, and great sharp edge. He learned a lot from Kit Carson and it shows!
Like most of Mike’s knives, this one has a hollow ground S30V blade with a bead blasted finish. Pocket clip is in the tip-down position, and the liner lock is slightly notched for easy of use. Opening and closing of the knife is silky smooth, and has this amazing feel to it that not a lot of maker’s have achieved. I’d like to say that operating the knife is almost hynotic. The lock engages with a slightly different sound than the framelock version, but still feels solid. You can’t go wrong with an Obenauf!

Neat little carbon fiber knife. I’m looking to add a new knife to my collection for jogging and other activities where I’ll be sweating and wearing nothing but a T-Shirt or the equivalent. If you have experience with edged weapons, I’d love to get your feedback on this design.
