RJ Martin is one of the hottest knifemakers at the moment, and its not hard to see why. While his folders are the source of most of the hype, his fixed blade knives are still beautifully crafted, and masterfully designed. The Manta Ray is one of his smaller models featuring the stingray skin and cord-wrapped handle.

The 4 1/4″ solid stainless steel blade is made from CPM-S30V steel, and double hollow ground. The knife also has a false edge that meets with the primary edge, creating a beautiful grind line. This example is perfectly symmetrical as far as I can see, and shows extremely good workmanship. The cord is epoxy impregnanted, and tough as nails, while still ensuring good purchase.

The rear tang of the blade is exposed, revealing a nicely cut skullcrusher. The shape of the handle is somewhat unique for a cord-wrapped handle, with visible finger grooves and a decently sized choil. I love how the knife feels in the hand for a cord-wrapped handle. Usually I love the look of cord-wrapped handles but dislike the feel, but the Manta Ray works for me in both departments. The cool ethnic, Japanese styling combined with old-school American ergonomics.

The blade is a modified wharncliffe with a bit of a belly nearning the tip. This is a very useful design for EDC, though the style of the knife may make it difficult to use as an EDC for more discreet individuals who prefer low-key folders.

Overall the RJ Martin Manta Ray is perfected crafted with beautiful grind lines and, crisp edges. The blade is shaving sharp and has a wonderful blade shape, and fantastic finish. While his folders are famous for their slick action, his fixed blades reveal that his ability to grind, design and shape a beautiful and functional knife are up there with some of the best. A highly recommended knife, and at a very reasonably priced at $350 you won’t even have to worry about getting a payday loan in order to afford one.
