Kirby Lambert Whar Gouge Grip Knife [video]
Before I got my Spearpoint with the Mammoth handles, this was my favourite Kirby knife. This Whar is unique from other Whar folders because the blade on this one is slightly curved on the spine near the tip… Only two like this exist, and the other one belongs to James Hetfield of Metallica!
Final production versions of this knife have a more angled back spine near the tip like a reverse tanto, while this one is rounded. I elected to get a gouge grip handle as I love the aesthetics of it, with a satin finished, blue annodized titanium frame beneath the silver weave G-10 scales, the knife screams “tacticool”.
Kirby made this knife to my specifications with dual thumbstuds and mother of pearl inlays in them, and the coolest backspacer I’ve ever seen. a somewhat geometrical design with ball bearing inlays in it, annodized purple on the flats. VERY COOL! I think the backspacer is often an underappreciated part of a knife. A knife with a backspacer feels better in the hand than a knife with standoffs, and protects the blade better.
Every knife I have ever gotten from Kirby Lambert has been amazing, and he seems to always outdo himself on each one. He is a truly amazing maker and easily my favourite one. The flat ground S30V blade keeps an outstanding edge and cuts like stink. I love the wharncliffe/sheepsfoot blade for light use such as opening letters and packages.
