Spyderco Dodo C80 Folding Knife [video]

The Spyderco Dodo is one of the more odd knives made by Spyderco in the last couple of years. and features their ball-lock, which was created in response to Benchmade’s Axis-Lock a few years ago. Its a great little cutter that has a wide blade, and very low blade to handle ratio… typical of many Spydies.

Eric Glesser, who is Sal Glesser’s son, designed this knife. For those of you who do not know, Sal Glesser is the founder of Spyderco. The knife was designed early in Eric’s knife designing career, and he has gone on to design several more for Spyderco such as the Polliwog, Scorpius and Manix. I have to say that I am really starting to like most of the designs by Eric. This one is no different.

The Dodo is now discontinued and it’s value may increase in time, as is characteristic of most discontinued Spydies. That’s one of the benefits of collecting Spyderco knives. The Dodo fits the hand like a glove, which is really nice… a common theme among Eric’s designs, though it does not allow for modified reverse grips quite as well.

Blade steel is a nice hearty S30V stainless, and the recurved blade comes to a very sharp point, which may easily break if used for anything besides light-duty cutting. The spine of the blade is bead-blasted in contrast to the blade sides which are satin finished.. a nice touch. Handles are finely grippy G-10, with a reversible wire pocket clip. Edge is sharp as nuts, as typical of Spyderco’s knife.

I don’t recommend testing the sharpness by shaving your arm hair with this knife as I usually do, as the recurve and point makes it easy to cut yourself! The Ball Bearing Lock is a bit hard to unlock as i find the ball bearing itself is a bit slippery to release with my thumb or my index finger. Overall I’d rather have a liner lock or a compression lock as even the compression lock more convenient for me to use.
